Brisbane's best bookshops
Brisbane’s bookstore owners know that choosing and buying a book should be just as much fun as reading it. Whether you’re after a book that is brand new or second-hand, Brisbane has a stack of stores to help you get lost in a world of words.
Riverbend Books, Bulimba
Books and coffee go hand-in-hand and local favourites Avid Reader in West End and Riverbend Books & Tea House in Bulimba are cornerstones of Brisbane’s literary scene, which also do a great line in coffee. With two locations, Milton and Bulimba, Mary Ryan’s Books, Music & Coffee is another bookstore that gives you the chance to put your feet up between browsing.
In the city, Folio Books is the perfect stop to find all things words as well as niche creative industry titles and coffee table books; and in Toowong the American Book Store, unlike the name suggests, is run by an Australian family and is your one-stop shop for good books.
Scrumptious Reads, Fortitude Valley
Who knew Brisbane could be home to so many niche bookstores? Open the page to thrilling crime and sci-fi stories at Pulp Fiction in Brisbane City. The CBD also has plenty on offer including Queensland’s leading comic book retailer, Comics Etc.
For a great range of children's literature, Where The Wild Things Are is located next to Brisbane favourite, Avid Reader in West End. Or further out, The Mad Hatters Bookshop also stocks a wide range of children's books at Manly on Brisbane's Bayside. While there be sure to pop down the road to Little Gnome in Wynnum for coffee, cake and self-published novels.
Those with a love of food are not forgotten, with Fortitude Valley’s Scrumptious Reads being a tasty morsel of a store filled exclusively with cookbooks. Last but not least, Title at South Bank is stocked with plenty of music, films and books to keep you busy.
Bent Books, West End
Sometimes the joy of finding an old, out-of-print book is as good as the joy of smelling a new one. Brisbane has a whole community of second-hand bookstores with staff ready to help fill your wildest requests.
Bent Books in West End specialises in quality rare and second-hand tomes. The Annerley Community Bookshop is a not-for-profit community enterprise that re-invests all profits back into the community.
Clarence Corner in Woolloongabba is filled with high-quality, second-hand reads, and Archives Fine Books in the CBD claims to have more than one million books on its shelves.
