A Brew or Two
By Christine Retschlag
It's no secret that Brisbane is synonymous with beer. From the iconic XXXX Ale House at Milton to boutique breweries, there’s plenty of action bubbling away in this city. Here are some of our top froths.
Think Brisbane, think beer, think XXXX. A highlight of a visit to this Milton establishment is the Brewery Tour which explains the history of this 130-year-old icon.
Follow the green beacon to Teneriffe and you’ll find the brewery of the same name. The ales aside, you’ll learn some really cool terminology such as a growler and a squealer.
The Brisbane Brewing Company brews its beer in 1000-litre batches and supplies it to the Brewhouse Brisbane, located at Woolloongabba. Try the Up Yer Kilt Scottish Ale.
In quaint Capalaba you’ll find the Bacchus Brewing Company where you can tour, taste and takeaway quarter and half kegs. There’s some tasty ales and couple of growlers as well.
West End’s trendy set loves to gravitate here for the huge range of beer on the menu. For our money, try the Sunshine Coast Chili, or My Wife’s Bitter…if you dare.
A little bit of Belgium in sunny Brisbane is what you’ll find at Mary St, in the heart of the city. Try some of the cherry-infused brews and don’t miss the mussels.
Bavaria comes to Brisbane but there’s no lederhosen at this Eagle St establishment. Under strict Bavarian laws, you will find only four natural ingredients in the Pure Bier here.
A cool name deserves a cool beer and that’s what you’ll find at Burnett Lane’s Super Whatnot. Rare, exotic craft beer is the order of the day here.
It seems fitting that this swanky gastrobar is located along George St, home to Brisbane’s politicians and lawyers. Try the Lord Nelson 3 Sheets.
Newstead sounds like a superb suburb for a tipple or two, so why not check out Tippler’s Tap. This craft beer bar operates under the premise of “sustaining the good beer drinker”.
Milton is the venue for this unpretentious craft beer bar where you can drink brews such as the Feral Hop Hog and the Mountain Goat Bigfoot.
If you feel that life is slightly bitter-sweet, you might wish to head to New Farm’s Bitter Suite where you’ll find more than 60 bottle craft beers and seven taps to cure your melancholy.
Not to be confused with Brisbane’s kerbside collection, Kerbside Bar at Fortitude Valley stocks more than 200 beers and ciders, perfect after a day of foraging.
Four Hearts Brewing
Be still my beating…brew. At Four Hearts Brewing Company in Ipswich, you’ll find beer full of flavour and devoid of chemicals and preservatives and with nothing artificial.
