Fort Lytton National Park protects the birthplace of Queensland's military history. From 1881 to 1945 this classic coastal fortress was the focus of Queensland's defence activity. One of several built around Australia's coast in the nineteenth century for protection from invasion, the well-preserved pentagonal fort is concealed behind grassy embankments and surrounded by a water-filled moat.

Join a guided tour and immerse yourself in the fascinating history of the fort and its restored guns, which were designed to fire and disappear! Learn more detail in the museum. Enjoy a picnic with a background of scenic river views. Fort Lytton is half an hour’s drive from the centre of Brisbane.

The fort is open every Sunday and most public holidays. You can walk around Fort Lytton with a guided tour or at your own pace. Entry is free and bookings are not necessary unless you want o book for a guided tour. The first tour is at 10:30 am and the last tour is at 2pm. Tours take approximately 90 minutes. Fort Lytton is closed to the general public on weekdays but group tours can be arranged.
