What to wear in Brisbane?

Most Queenslanders dress quite casually, although the dress code in some golf courses, restaurants, hotels and bars is smart-casual or formal. 

You can wear lightweight clothing all year round; however, bring something warm to slip on at night as the temperature drops during winter. Bring swimwear as even Brisbane’s cooler winter months enjoy warm, sunny days.

Remember to wear comfortable shoes when walking in the national parks. Consider wearing long-sleeved clothing and remember the insect repellent and sunscreen.

To drive a car in Brisbane you need a valid driver’s licence. If you will be in Brisbane for less than 3 months, an international driver’s licence or a valid overseas driver’s licence is acceptable but you must carry a translation if the document is not in English. If you plan to stay longer than three months, you will need to obtain an Australian driver’s licence. To gain an Australian licence you will need to pass an eye test, road rules test and a practical driving test, there is also a cost to getting your licence. 

What are the speed limits on Brisbane roads?

In Brisbane suburban areas, the speed limit is 50km and 60km on major roads. Outside the city, limits are up to 110km on motorways.

Are seniors discount card accepted in Brisbane?

Although international seniors cards are not officially recognised in Australia, many businesses will honour the discounts they give their own seniors, so it’s always worth asking.

What are the smoking laws in Brisbane?

Brisbane has very strict local laws on smoking. Current laws prohibit smoking anywhere inside pubs, clubs, hotels, restaurants and workplaces and outdoor public places including the Queen Street Mall, playgrounds, beaches, sports stadiums and within 4 metres of non-residential building entrances. 

Where can I get internet access in Brisbane?

There are numerous internet cafes located around the city and in all major hotels and hostels. Brisbane City Council also provides free wi-fi in parks, the Queen Street Mall, State Library of Queensland and on trains, CityCat and ferry services.

Are there any National Parks in Brisbane?

Brisbane is home to more than 1,920 parks and reserves. Just west of the city, you will find the sprawling hills and rainforests of the D’Aguilar National Park which is just one of the spectacular National Parks surrounding Brisbane. Are there any National Park Fees? 

General access to a national park for a day of bushwalking does not require a fee or permit. Before camping in a park, forest or similar reserve, visitors must obtain a camping permit and pay camping fees. If visitors intend on taking a vehicle through any of the National Parks, a valid vehicle access permit must be purchased. If travelling with a group, permits should be organised by the tour operator and may be included in the price of the tour. Where are Brisbane’s World Heritage Sites?

The Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area straddles the border between New South Wales and Queensland, protecting subtropical and temperate rainforests. Protected areas in this property include Lamington, Springbrook, Mt Barney and Main Range National Parks. An estimated 2 million people a year visit this World Heritage area.

Do visitors need a permit to go fishing in Brisbane?

Can I play golf in Brisbane?

Brisbane has a diverse range of courses set in beautiful natural surroundings including Victoria Park and  Brookwater Golf and Country Club.

Are there theme parks in Brisbane?

There are no theme parks located in Brisbane, however there are many transport operators who run daily transfers to Australia Zoo about an hour drive north, and Sea World, Movie World, Dreamworld and Wet ‘n Wild, just an hour south of Brisbane on the Gold Coast.

Brisbane is home to the largest and oldest koala sanctuary in the world, Lone Pine. The Queen Street Mall and City is open seven days until 6pm, with late night shopping on Thursdays in suburban areas and Fridays in the city centre.

There are a growing number of organic markets, restaurants and food outlets in Brisbane. The Australian Certified Organic (ACO) is accredited to certify organic operations in Australia and currently certifies around 55% of the Australian organic industry. Northey Street Organic Market operates solely for organic produce while many others including the Jan Power’s Farmers Markets feature organic stalls. One of the best organic restaurants is Mondo Organics at West End.

Are vaccinations required to visit Brisbane?

In general, no special immunisations or medications are necessary for travel to Australia. However, insect repellents and other measures to prevent mosquito bites are strongly advised for some areas.

Is it safe to drink the water?

Yes, it is safe to drink tap water in Brisbane and bottled water is also available from local supermarkets, restaurants and hotels. 

Will ATM and credit cards work in Brisbane?

Automatic Teller Machines are located everywhere in Australia and visitors can withdraw cash from overseas accounts if their ATM card has international access, and the ATM has a cirrus logo. Visitors should check with their financial institution before they leave to see if they have international access. 

All major credit cards are accepted in Australia, but repayments to many of these cards can only be made in the country where they were issued. Do not rely on being able to get a credit card once arriving in Brisbane because this is very difficult due to credit and identification laws. 

How safe is Brisbane?

In fact, Australia is a very safe country compared with almost anywhere in the world. Political unrest is limited, crime rates are low and strict gun control laws provide a safe environment.

What will be closed over the Christmas/Easter period?

Generally, the shops only close on Christmas Day, Good Friday and Easter Sunday. Hotels remain open throughout the entire period. Restaurants differ in their opening times so best to call in advance.

Where is the international airport located? Do I have to pay departure tax? 

The Brisbane domestic and international airports are located 30 minutes from the city centre along Airport Drive at Eagle Farm and are accessible via several public transport options. Both terminals are located adjacent to each other and are connected to the city via rail, bus and taxi. 

A passenger movement charge of departure tax is included in the price of airline tickets. Exemptions apply to children under 12 years, 24-hour transit passengers, or transit passengers who stay longer than a day if their departure is delayed by circumstances beyond their control.

How much cash can I bring?

There is no limit to the amount of currency you can bring in or out of Australia. However, you must declare amounts of A$10,000 or more in Australian currency or foreign equivalent. If asked by Customs you must also fill in a Bearer Negotiable Instruments (BNI) form if you're carrying promissory notes, travellers cheques, personal cheques, money orders or postal orders.
