Dunwich Cemetery is the second oldest in Queensland. A walk-through provides an insight into the different people who have stepped on the shores of North Stradbroke Island and have made it their final resting place.
A trail map that follows all the resting spots of some of the island's most influential inhabitants is available from the nearby museum.
The cemetery is mostly open grass fields, but beneath the surface lie at least 8000 former inmates of a 19th-century asylum for the destitute. Descendants of asylum inmates and local authorities are now trying to find out more about these lost graves.
The cemetery is within a 10-minute walk of the ferry terminal.
