12 things you can't miss at South Bank's Christmas celebrations

7 November 2017

Brisbane’s annual Christmas celebrations are back! At South Bank, the fun is on from 15-23 December and as always, the festivities are completely free to attend. Don’t miss these delightful experiences during your visit.

River Quay
Hum along to carols at River Quay. It’s not the festive season until you’ve enjoyed carols under the stars at least once! River Quay’s iteration, Carols by Twilight, is on at 5pm, 6pm and 7pm nightly, complete with stunning river breezes and city views. Make sure you bring a picnic along with you – River Quay is licensed from 10am-8pm daily.

Christmas Fireworks
Marvel at the fireworks. It’s little wonder fireworks are the hallmark of any celebration – nothing beats the romantic flair of glittering colours sparkling in the night sky. South Bank’s Christmas Fireworks Spectacular presented by eatSouthBank is on from 20-23 December at 7:45pm. Head to the Clem Jones Promenade, Streets Beach or River Quay for the best view.

Trees
Lose yourself in the lights.
Tucked away amid the tall trees of Rainforest Green is South Bank’s very first Christmas soundscape. A beautiful sensory experience, we recommend you stroll through and unwind while the light shimmers by and gentle Christmas music plays. The soundscape opens from 6pm nightly.

Soleil Pool Bar
Take in a festive tipple. Maybe it’s the warm air or maybe it’s the joyous atmosphere, but either way, South Bank’s bars are heaving during the Christmas period. Soak up some of the ambience (and a drink or two!) for yourself at our favourite haunts, Malt Traders, Soleil Pool Bar, Stoke Bar or Hop and Pickle

Christmas Markets
Do your Christmas shopping. Treat family and friends to something unique this year from South Bank’s Christmas Gift Market. Open from 3-10pm nightly, the stalls offer food, clothes, jewellery, toys and more.

Little Days Out
Enjoy free kid’s activities. From 3-7pm daily, head to the Little Stanley Street Lawns and the Central Cafe Lawns for Holly Jolly Kids. Activities include Christmas card making, bauble designing, ballet activities with the Queensland Ballet and more. Bookings are not required.

Christmas Beach Cinema
Cool off with a dive-in movie. Watch The Polar Express, The Santa Clause, Home Alone and plenty more Christmas classic amid the cool waters of Streets Beach. Free Christmas movies will be playing at 6pm and 8pm nightly. For the full schedule, head to the event listing.

Santa
Meet Santa – for free! Save your pennies this December and take the kids to meet Santa for free in Stanley Street Plaza. He’ll be there from 4-5pm, 5:30-6:30pm and 7-8pm daily.

Brooklyn Depot
Satisfy your tastebuds. Let’s be honest – Christmas = feasting! South Bank has dozens of restaurants serving up a range of cuisines including American, Vietnamese, Japanese and more. Our picks for a lazy lunch or dinner are Brooklyn Depot, Popolo, Viet de Lites and Harajuku Gyoza.

XPress Train
Ride the Xpress Train. A trackless train will be making its way through the Parklands this summer! Kids and parents can climb aboard and see South Bank from a new angle. Please note that there is a fee (per person) to ride the train.

Stanley Street Plaza
Snap a very festive selfie. Everyone knows that if you haven’t taken a selfie, you weren’t really there. During your South Bank visit, head to Stanley Street Plaza and snap a pic of the giant Christmas at South Bank sign, or the sparkling Christmas tree. Don’t forget to share your pics with us using @visitsouthbank and #christmasinbrisbane.

Christmas
Take in a performance. A range of street performers (including a brass band, acrobatic elves and musicians) will be scattered throughout the Parklands during the Christmas celebrations. Settle in on the grass to watch, or simply enjoy them as you’re strolling by.

South Bank’s Christmas celebrations are on from 15-23 December 2017. You can also enjoy free events at Roma Street Parkland from 8-17 December and in the City from 25 November until 24 December. For full details, head to the Christmas in Brisbane homepage.
