What’s on for kids in the Cultural Precinct this August

Queensland Museum

August in Brisbane means windy weather, a mid-week public holiday and usually a trip to the Ekka. But if carnival rides and fairy floss aren’t on your agenda this year, check out some of the great activities on offer in South Bank’s Cultural Precinct instead!

QAGOMA has two very different exhibits to awe and inspire - Kate Beynon’s Friendly Beasts and Marvel: Creating the Cinematic Universe. Get crafty with paper and collage beastly masks in the Children’s Art Centre or go high-tech with the behind-the-scenes CGI effects that bring the superhero worlds to life. The Marvel exhibit closes September 3, so this month is your last chance to catch the movie magic!

Celebrate National Science Week (12-20 August) with a trip to the Queensland Museum. This month you can see the Gladiators: Heroes of the Colosseum exhibition as well as the perennial favourites – dinosaurs and native animals. There are also two extra special events planned in August – a Behind the Scenes Tour of the Museum (for children aged 10+) and kids aged 5 to 12 can book in for the very first ever Goodnight at the Museum Sleepover (adult accompaniment is required).

Twinkle-toes opportunities abound, with Queensland Ballet’s La Fille mal gardee in the QPAC Playhouse for two weeks, with several matinee performances and discounted family tickets available. For teeny tiny dancers, explore the world of dance at the Dance-a-Story activity at Little Days Out on the 10th of August, where children will learn dance steps that re-tell the story of The Jungle Book.
