Greeter Michael Johnston

Number of years lived in Brisbane:

I arrived in Brisbane from Townsville in 1950, so I have spent most of my life in Brisbane absorbing its diverse experiences.

Favourite things about Brisbane:

You can’t beat Brisbane’s fantastic weather, our beautiful meandering river, our heritage buildings, our fascinating history and our lifestyle.

Favourite place in Brisbane:

Our magnificent City Hall is my number one place. It has unexpected wonders like its circular auditorium with 8000-plus LED lights in its dome, a huge pipe organ with 4000-plus pipes, and its many courtyards and function rooms. I also love our bayside beaches and islands, and our churches and cathedrals in the CBD.

Fascinating fact I like to share about Brisbane:

How Brisbane has grown from a penal settlement in 1824 to what is now a safe, vibrant, multi-cultural city. Our history may be short, but we have a lot of captivating history that I love to share with my visitors.

Special interests:

Major Heritage Buildings, Penal Colony and Early Settlement History, and collecting/playing guitars.

I enjoy being a Brisbane Greeter because:

I just love getting out and about in our beautiful city and giving visitors the opportunity to experience its wonders. The Brisbane Greeters Program is such a wonderful concept, and I'm so glad to be part of it.
