Our quick guide to exploring the seaside town of Wynnum
Some things never change – and for Wynnum it is the seaside town’s popularity with daytrippers. Just a short 30-minute drive south-east of the CBD (or an easy train ride), splash about in the wading pool, shop local artisan goods, find a new book and embrace a sea change in Wynnum.
First up, some history
Brisbane locals wanting a breath of fresh seaside air have been flocking to the bayside suburb almost since the first block of land was surveyed and sold in 1860.
At one point the bayside suburb was so popular for weekend trips that it had four picture theatres.
Here are four ways you can enjoying a day by the bay
Let the kids splash and slide when this pool fills with seawater at high tide. This is a summer playground dream with a slide in the middle of the pool and adjoining playground. It’s easy for parents to keep a watchful eye in this walled pool area.
Shop local in the town centre
Wander through the bayside’s range of boutique stores. Find unique goods at Cultivate Design Co and Ebb and Flow, or support local Australian artisans and designers with purchases from The Collective.
Read your way through two independent bookshops. Mad Hatters has created an enchanting space for minds to escape to, while Little Gnome boasts a wide range of Australian self-published authors and Montville coffee.
Take a walk along Wynnum Mangrove Boardwalk
Wind yourself through the mangrove forest and spot the local wildlife who call this place home. Along the way, display boards will help to describe the nature of the area and the importance of mangroves to the Wynnum and Manly foreshore.
Go on a round-the-world tapas adventure
Enjoy a wine, craft beer or cocktail at Cedar + Pine, with the added bonus of cheeseburger sliders and crispy duck baos. Yum.
Don’t stop now, there’s plenty more to do. Check out our comprehensive guide of things to do in Wynnum and the neighbouring suburb of Manly.
