Family Fun for Free

By Nicole Madigan

In a city as beautiful as Brisbane and with weather to match, you’d be crazy not to pack up the family and make the most of every weekend. But finding something to keep everyone happy can be difficult – and become expensive. It doesn’t have to be though.

Take the time to have a look around you’ll find Brisbane is a treasure trove of family activities that don’t cost a cent.

The Cultural Centre at South Bank provides a full day out (if not more) with activities and exhibitions to appeal to the entire family. The Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) is a feast for adult eyes, while the interactive Children’s Art Centre will inspire little artists in the making. If science and history spark your interest, then head to the nearby Queensland Museum where you’ll find fossils, mummies, flora and fauna as well as a fantastic dinosaur display, complete with a Dino Activity Zone for the kids.

Wynnum Waterpark

For those who prefer the great outdoors, the Wynnum Wading Pool, built during the 1930s, will have parents relaxed and children delighted. The “tidal pool” fills with seawater at high tide, and is only thigh-deep.  Squirting whales and a nearby playground make this a fun and safe day out.

For a family picnic with a twist, head to New Farm Park, with its peaceful surroundings and abundance of shade. After lunch, pop next door to the Brisbane Powerhouse, which hosts live music and shows, weekend farmers’ markets and, at certain times of the year, a stunning moonlight cinema.

But for those hoping for a closer brush with nature, there’s no going past the Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens’ Hide ’n’ Seek Children’s Trail. Children and adults alike can enjoy the purpose-built walk through the gardens, stopping and learning about particular plants and wildlife along the way.

So grab the family, give the wallet a rest, and enjoy Brisbane.
