Footy weekend in Brisbane - Visit Brisbane

VB

In Brisbane for the footy? Here's the stuff you need to do

If you're in town for the footy you'd be mad not to make a weekend of it. From top-notch food to cold brews and poolside chills to adventure and thrills, there's a stack of things to do both before and after the final whistle sounds.

Friday

Dive into a feast

Welcome to Brisbane! Let’s theoretically say it’s Friday afternoon, you’ve checked into your hotel and your inner caveman is rearing its head. You need food, and fast. Red Hook in Gresham Lane has the medicine. Sure, there's wings and burgers but the real drinking companion here are the mac n cheese squares with chipotle BBQ. Hook in.

Choose how the evening will pan out

From Red Hook it’s an easy walk to either the laid-back and chilled-out bars on Eagle St or a quick cab ride to the fast-paced clubs, live music venues and boutique bars of downtown Fortitude Valley.  We’re not here to tell you what to do, but we suggest you choose Eagle St – take it easy tonight, there’s a jam-packed weekend of adventure to be had.

Saturday

Take it to the top

Views over the city during the Story Bridge Adventure Climb

Rise and shine – it’s time to scale the Story Bridge, which has bragging rights as one of only three bridges in the world you can climb. Take a Story Bridge Adventure Climb and get a cracking view of the Brisbane River and the CBD.

Sample Brisbane’s goods

After an adrenaline-packed morning, slow the pace with a 90-minute tour of the XXXX Brewery in Milton, or step it up a notch with a helicopter pub crawl through Greater Brisbane.

XXXX Brewery Tours

Experience the inner workings of the heritage XXXX Brewery, explore the story of beer, and gain an insight into the 135-year history of a Queensland icon. View how beer is made, from the raw ingredients through to the state-of-the-art packing hall, then learn how to pour the perfect beer and taste it like a brewer.

If you opt for the latter, drive west of Brisbane and join Captain Mike and Pterodactyl Helicopters for a pub crawl like no other. Hop between three to five classic country pubs, sinking a beer at each and stopping for lunch along the way. The tour can accommodate up to six people.

Get ready for a big night out

Hungry? Want to eat somewhere that feels like a place to party rather than a first-date venue? Too easy. Fortitude Valley has welcomed a number of new hybrid restaurant/bars that serve gourmet meals with bespoke cocktails and craft beers, and play music at levels that’ll keep the vibe going.

Try Thai-fusion restaurant LONgTIME, Italian at Bucci, neo-Chinese at Little Valley, or French steak frites at Les Bubbles.

From any of these restaurants it is an easy wander to the next craft brew pub, rooftop bar or live music den. But keep an eye on the clock, the game starts soon.

Kick on after Suncorp Stadium

Dive into pre and post-game action at the bustling Caxton Street. It's just a quick stroll from Suncorp Stadium and has some cracking bars, restaurants and entertainment. Read our picks of Caxton Street here

If you spend the day watching the cricket, or an afternoon at an AFL match at the Gabba on Brisbane’s southside, read this trail of historic pubs and places to get a feed post-match.

Sunday

Easy like Sunday morning

Sunday morning brekky will clear that head of yours and after a night on the town, bacon is essential. Tuck into a hearty breakfast at NodoHarvey’s, Little Loco, Miss Jones or The Little Larder, or cross the river to West End and try Morning After, London Fields or Plenty.

Putt your way to victory

Sunday is a day of leisure and what activity is more leisurely than golf? Enjoy a stunning Brisbane CBD backdrop while you putt-putt or golf your way around the Victoria Park Golf Course. If you’re keen to swing a club but aren’t an accomplished golfer, Sirromet Winery’s Supa Golf may be more your speed. And you can get breakfast or lunch there as well.

Adventure on the river

Two men rock climb at Kangaroo Point Cliffs

If you’re after something a little more adrenaline inducing, try abseiling down the Kangaroo Point Cliffs or kayaking on our Brisbane River. Riverlife Adventure Centre has it all for the active enthusiast.

One last song

Pop by South Bank for a long, lazy Sunday lunch in the parklands before facing the reality that your weekend has come to an end. Try Hop & Pickle, Popolo, Ole or Zeus

Alternative suggestions

If you’ve still got time to kill, here are a few more suggestions for things to do.
