23 things to do in Milton

Nestled in Brisbane's friendly inner-west, Milton is a growing suburb with a tonne of history. With a large number of businesses having their base here, it's always been a great place to grab lunch or an after-work drink, but its sporting ties are what make it really special.

1. Learn about the famous Milton Mango

XXXX Brewery

Smiling down over Milton is the famous XXXX brewery and the perfect way to get to know the history is to take the brewery tour. It takes about an hour and a half and is topped off with a tasting. Cheers!

2. Chow down on fresh Vietnamese fare at Mrs Luu’s

For a cheap and cheerful lunch pop into Mrs Luu’s for some of the best Vietnamese in town. Former owners of the famous Trang at West End opened this Milton eatery and it’s been booming ever since with locations popping up all around Brisbane. They’re only open on weekdays though so make this a mid-week fix.  

3. Try one of Brisbane's best coffees at Bunker

Right next door to Mrs Luu’s is Bunker, reputably one of the best cups of Joe getting around. Nestled in a vine covered garage, this hidden gem is a must visit. They too are only open on weekdays but operate from the Milton Markets if you just have to get that weekend fix.

4. Meet a farmer and get your meal prep on at the Milton Markets

The Milton Markets relocated from Red Hill in 2016 and have gone from strength to strength. Opening every Sunday from 6am ‘til noon, it’s jam-packed with farmer stalls, delicious breakfasts, handicrafts, fashion and more.

5. Check out the new kids on the block

Milton is a growing at breakneck speed and has some new eateries to feed the new residents moving into the popular area. Check out La Stazione for epic Italian, Burger Institute for packed burgers, fries and milkshakes and Ribs and Rumps for all of your carnivorous needs. All of these are located near the Railway Terrace entrance to the Milton Train station. 

6. Marvel at Brisbane's very own Eiffel Tower

Milton’s Park Road is famous among locals as one of the first European-style café precincts in Brisbane. The giant Eiffel tower replica is hard to miss and provides the perfect couple selfie spot without the European airfare. Hot Tip: La Dolce Vita below does a mean Nutella Italian hot chocolate.

7. Hit the river

One of Brisbane’s best walks/runs/rides is along the Bicentennial Bikeway that meanders along the river from Toowong in the west into the Brisbane City. Damaged in the 2011 floods, this stunning trail has been restored and is better than ever for a stroll or to get your daily sweat on.

If you like your beverages a little less mainstream, Scratch is another Milton favourite worth a visit. With a rotation of local and independent brews on tap and a BYO food policy, it’s a great place to watch the afternoon pass you by.

Fromage the Cow is Brisbane’s first licensed fromagarie and made all of our cheesy dreams come true when it opened in 2016. Dine in for a cheesy feast or stock up on around 80 types of cheese for your home collection.

11. Make the kids dreams come true

Frew Park is nestled between Haig and Milton Rd and is heaven for kids. With a huge, futuristic playground, it’s a destination unto itself. The park also features fitness equipment, barbecues and huge lawned area perfect for kicking a footy around.

12. Game, set, match.

Roy Emerson Tennis Centre is also located at Frew Park and stands on the grounds of the famous Milton Tennis Centre where many a superstar was made. These days you can hire courts and equipment, join a tournament, get some coaching or just spectate from the elevated viewing platform replete with sweets and coffee.

13. Catch a game at the famous Suncorp Stadium

Milton’s crowning glory is the legendary Suncorp Stadium (or Lang Park for the oldies). From State of Origin to international rugby tests, soccer and even concerts, Suncorp is Brisbane’s own Centre stage. Visit in February and be part of the inaugural Brisbane Global Rugby Tens which has it's home here.

14. Get snookered

Q-Masters is a Milton institution with 20 years of cue sporting glory under its belt. Open til midnight everyday, it has a café and bar and is super welcoming making it the perfect place for a late night catch-up. Thursday night is the social pool competition, so pop in before 7 and chalk up in time for a 7:30 start.

15. Discover a hidden church

Built in 1891 after the 1890 floods, Anglican Parish of Auchenflower is a hidden gem you may have spotted while wandering around the grounds of Suncorp Stadium. Its heritage listing meant that when developing the stadium its picturesque grounds had to be retained leaving an unexpected juxtaposition of architecture that’s well worth a look.

Being a local favourite and a nationally recognized restaurant is not an easy task, but Deer Duck Bistro is doing both in style. The quirky space is fun and personality filled with a menu to match. We highly recommend the degustation which is ever-changing and always delicious.

The TUK TUK Bar lives at the back of Temple Thai on Park Road. Just follow the fence along Gordon Street and you’ll find a cute bar with cheap tap beer and cocktails with a little South-East Asian magic!

In a world where book stores seem to be all but forgotten, Mary Ryan’s is a sanctuary for those who prefer the feel of paper to a kindle. With a huge selection of books and gifts served with a hot chocolate or chamomile tea this inner-city oasis is a book lovers haven that feels like a warm hug.

Togninis Cafe and Deli Milton

With no shortage of parks, it's not hard to find the perfect picnic spot as well as the perfect food at Tognini's cafe and deli. The Milton State School oval is bordered by established figs and makes the perfect location for a lazy Sunday afternoon.

20. Eat all the perogi's at the Polish Club market days

Once a month, the Polish Club opens it's doors so that regular Brisbanites can buy and feast on all the Polish spoils. Perogi's (traditional polish dumplings stuffed with cheese and potato), polish doughnuts, salami, sausages, pork hock and freshly baked bread are just some of the items for sale – it' a European feast!

21. Get in training at InTraining

Based on Park Rd, this specialist running store has everything you need to get fun-run ready. InTraining runs training groups for all experience types and is a great way to get you back in shape or hit your next fitness goal.

22. Enjoy a tipple or five

Aether Brewing

Who knew you could have a night out in Milton? After starting at The Scratch Bar, move along the street to Aether Brewing for home-brewed craft beers and delicious bites. Keep strolling to find Cribb Street Social sporting a large alfresco area, perfect for a jug on the green and finally head over to Newstead Brewing to find a large brewpub with space for everybody.

23. Let someone else prepare your picnic for you

Milton’s streets are lined with pre-war cottages and Queenslander-style homes and they give the area an old world feel. Cafe Auchenflower is based in one of these cottages and has all of the old world charm that you could want. They’ll even lend you a picnic rug or chairs so you can eat in the little park next door!
