Moreton Bay Region:
Things to do

19 JANUARY 2023

North of Brisbane lies a region brimming with eco and outdoor experiences. From llama walks (yes, llama walks) and trail-biking to brewery and winery tours, travellers of all tastes and energy levels can follow their bliss to Moreton Bay. Here’s what to do when you’re spending a day on the bay.

Naturally, this waterside region offers a bounty of sea-bound action. Moreton Bay Boat Club in Redcliffe, is a hub for sailing enthusiasts and regularly hosts social sailing occasions. While you’re there, you can visit its seafood-centred restaurant and watch the boats set sail on the bay.

Based on breezy Bribie Island, Moreton Bay Jetski Hire and Ride presents a choice of small-group rides. Guided trips include The Jolly Roger (an hour’s ride around Pumicestone Passage), The Brisbane Buccaneer (a 90-minute thrill seeker’s experience that includes riding on the open ocean), and the Pumicestone Chase (a four-hour experience taking in the waterways surrounding the Glasshouse Mountains, with a refuelling break at Caloundra).

Further out to sea, from June to November each year, Brisbane Whale Watching takes its passengers to meet the gentle giants of the deep. The expert crew knows where to find their deep-sea-diving friends and guarantees a sighting each voyage. Whale watching trips depart from Redcliffe every day during the whale migration season.

If off-road travel calls your name, experience the best of Bribie Island from the viewpoint of a 4WD, with G’Day Adventure Tours. Meet the wildlife that lives on the fourth largest sand island in the world, take a dip in its lagoons, and feel the wind in your hair when you cruise along the beach in a 4WD. G’Day also offers kayaking and camping experiences, for those seeking a healthy dose of fresh air.

Call yourself a pedal pusher? Get on your bike at the Redcliffe Peninsula and hit the Moreton Bay Cycle Way. Stretching along the Brisbane coastline, the cycle way offers cyclists a chance to take in kilometres of postcard-worthy scenery along the way.

If there is any better companion to take on a walk than a llama, we’re yet to hear of them. Ottaba Llama Walks allows you to take a guided stroll with these friendly animals along the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail, around a local winery, or on Bribie Island. Show us a better way to spend a day.

Get better acquainted with the natural beauty of the Moreton Bay region with one of Brisbane Nature Tours’ immersive experiences. Traverse from Mount Glorious to Mount Mee by car and take in the rainforest of the D’Aguilar National Park, stopping for a wine tasting along the way – we recommend Ocean View Estates; or, take a guided walk of a five-kilometre trail through the Maiala Rainforest; enjoy a tour of the Bellthorpe Rainforest; buckle up for the Tawny Trails 4WD tour; or book your spot on the Kangaroos, Mangroves & The Ocean tour.

For an adventure-packed day on the bay, Bushwhacker Eco Tours and Moreton Bay Escapes are the go-to tour operators. From Moreton Bay, the team takes you to Moreton Island, where you can sightsee, snorkel, sand board, kayak, visit dolphins and more.

Thrill-seeking souls can turn their travels to the bay up a notch with Glasshouse Mountain Trail Bike Tours. Choose from one day to five days and give trail-bikers access to untamed forest surrounding the Glasshouse Mountains and all the gear necessary to hit the trails.

Those who’d prefer a flavour journey to an adrenaline-fuelled experience can book a seat on a wine or brewery tour. For beer enthusiasts, Tour de Brewery’s passionate guides will advise you to the best brews around the bay and beyond. And, in pursuit of top-notch drops and memorable scenery, Mountain Wine Tours presents its passengers with the region’s best wines, views and more.

Beyond the naturally beautiful landscapes of the region, there’s its thriving markets and arts scene to explore. Popular Redcliffe Farmers and Artisan Markets appear on the peninsula every Sunday, by the Redcliffe Jetty, bringing with them delicious foods, homemade wares, and more. For a further art fix, Red Poppy Art Collective on Redcliffe Parade (near the famed Bee Gees Way) brings together a curated collection of Australian artists’ and artisans’ artworks and wares.

If open-air adventures, nature-centric adventures and markets are your forte, start planning your Moreton Bay region adventure today.
