Roma Street Parkland is getting a brand new playground

Yes you heard correctly – Roma Street Parkland is currently upgrading one of its free playgrounds.

The playground, situated in the heart of the parkland, will offer children a space where they can explore, climb, run and slide to their hearts' content. It will feature birdhouse-inspired cubby houses and lookout towers, rope bridges, climbing nets, slides, a nest-style swing and beautiful greenery to explore, including a miniature orchard.

Its aesthetic inspiration comes from its spectacular surrounds. Natural elements and botanical features like tree frond feature poles, giant bromeliads and bamboo, fruit orchard and a passion fruit tunnel are all woven into the design. Work on the playground has already begun and is expected to be complete (weather permitting) by early December, just in time for the summer school holidays.

While the little ones run wild, letting their imagination take over, the rest of the family can sit back and enjoy the day with the inclusion of more seating and barbecue facilities. It will be the perfect excuse for a family day out.

To ensure public safety, the playground area will be closed to visitors during the works. In addition, all general power in the playground site and the connected Weeping Fig Ave (including its street lights) has been switched off. This means that until December, access to Weeping Fig Ave will be restricted to daylight hours only, when visibility is not impacted. Construction hours are from 7am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, and may cause some noise and dust. Control measures, including site screening, will be in place to reduce their impact.

For those who can’t wait until December for playtime, make sure you head to the Children’s Garden and Fig Tree Terrace playground (located at the end of Weeping Fig Ave  in the upper section of the Parkland, next to Colin Campbell Place) which is still open to all visitors. The Fig Tree Terrace Playground  has equipment suited for slightly younger tots, while the new playground is designed for an older age group.
