What to see at Brisbane's Moonlight Cinema

There is nothing more quintessential Queensland, than sprawling across a picnic rug and soaking up the balmy outdoor evenings of summer; Moonlight Cinema returns 14 December until 29 March 2020 to the lush green surrounds of Roma Street Parkland, so you can do just that!

Film buff or not, there is an abundance of genres to choose from, with a selection of onsite food vendors to satisfy every one of those mid-film cravings. Or, pack your own spread and set up camp for the evening, taking in the novelty of the big screen framed by the Parklands towering trees.

From festive favourites, to sing-alongs, action packed blockbusters and new releases, here are some of the highlights from the extensive Moonlight Cinema program.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…

If your festive flag isn’t flying high, these Christmas classics are guaranteed to get you in the merriment mood. Kicking off the opening weekend - Last Christmas, a feel-good love story staring Game of Thrones power house, Emilia Clarke. If you can’t go past a classic, the stellar cast of much adored film, Love Actually will feature on the big screen just in time for Christmas. Finally, Elf will ensure laughter across the lawn with the Christmas comedy starring Will Ferrell - perfect for a festive family outing.

Have a sing-along 

Warm up your vocals with an evening of crowd favourite sing-alongs! Delight in the sounds from award winning new release films, such as A Star is Born and Rocketman, staring Lady Gaga and Taron Egerton as a young Elton John. Littlies will be in mesmerised by Frozen 2 and The Greatest Show Man will showcase an assortment of enthralling circus performances and magnificent vocals from Australian man-of-many-talents, Hugh Jackman. Lastly, the vocals of Jennifer Hudson, Taylor Swift and Jason Derulo will enchant audiences, in the British–American musical fantasy film based on the iconic stage musical, Cats.  

Action packed flicks 

If high speed chases, high impact stunts, fist fights and shootouts get your heart racing, then this series of action packed films are sure to satisfy. The newly released Charlies Angels, featuring Twilight's Kristen Stewart showcases girl-power in abundance as three women battle villains. Star Wars enthusiasts and Jumanji fans are also in luck, and admirers of the Die Hard franchise will have the opportunity to feast their eyes on weapons, gadgets, and elaborate action sequences. 

Something new!

A new release is the perfect excuse to indulge in a bucket of popcorn, put your feet up and get lost in a world of CGI, stunts and fictional characters. Like A Boss sees two friends tested by the creation of their successful beauty company. Based on true events, Bombshell tells the story of female employees at Fox News as they take on a toxic male culture, starring Charlize Theron, Margot Robbie and Nicole Kidman. Finally, The Joker tells the dark tale of failed comedian Arthur Fleck, who resides in Gotham City, and his demise into The Joker.
