Picnic, barbecues and wet areas

Brisbane’s best views are on the table for your next meal at Roma Street Parkland. The beautiful picnic areas are rounded up below. Fun fact – many of them have free barbeques (there are 15 throughout the parkland) and two spaces are licensed wet areas. BBQs throughout the parkland are available on a first come, first served basis. Visitors are requested to move away to their picnic area when finished cooking to allow others to utilise the facilities.

Lakeside lawn

Lakeside lawn is an extremely tranquil place and the perfect location to take full advantage of the area’s natural shade – there is a canopy of leafy trees next to the lake. Situated next to the parklands main BBQs area, it is the perfect spot to laze back on a picnic rug in the sunshine or kick a ball around with some friends. The area is licensed, allowing the consumption of alcohol from 10am-8pm daily, with a substantial meal.

Lakeside Meadow is also the starting point for the Parkland Explorer, which you can jump on for a tour of the Parkland with one of our experienced volunteers, each week from Wednesday – Sunday. Please note that a journey on the Parkland Explorer requires a gold coin contribution per person and that times are subject to change throughout the year. Visit our Facebook page for this week’s operating times.

Sunset glade

Tucked away at the top of the Parkland, Sunset Glade is one of Roma Street Parkland’s most secluded areas and popular wedding site. This hidden treasure is ideal for an afternoon picnic with friends or maybe a spot of Yoga. The space also has a free barbeque, so you can enjoy a hot meal during your visit.

Celebration lawn

The Celebration Lawn is the ultimate picnic location in the early morning or the late afternoon – locals love laying a rug out in the sun and being mesmerized by the cascading waterfall. It’s also ideal for families, as the lawn is a great spot to kick around a ball. If you’re after something that’s a little bit romantic, visit the Celebration Lawn in the evening. At sundown, the waterfall is lit with a range of colours, giving a gorgeous backdrop to evening picnics. To add to the charm, the Celebration Lawn comes complete with free barbeques and is licensed, allowing the consumption of alcohol from 10am-8pm daily, with a substantial meal.

Palm tree court

The name says it all. This picturesque area is the Parkland’s most popular wedding location, nestled away in the Parkland surrounded by large palms and floral displays.

Children's Garden

The Children’s Garden is the ultimate place for the kids to release all that built up energy. They can run through the passionfruit tunnel, play on Waterharp or challenge themselves to climb up into the birds nest. The new garden has been designed as the ultimate ‘nature play’ adventure – encouraging kids to explore and discover nature through play, assessing and learning their own abilities whilst playing on the equipment with their families and friends. For the ultimate free barbeque experience, head to the Children’s Garden. The little ones can play ‘till their heart’s content while grown-ups cook up a tasty feast. Memorial Corner

At the tip of the parkland lies Memorial Corner, a reflective space for some of Brisbane’s main war memorials including the Brisbane Gallipoli Memorial (WWI, 1914-18), the Brisbane ‘Rats of Tobruk’ Memorial (WWII, 1939 -1945), the Australian Vietnamese War Memorial (Vietnam War, 1962-1972) and the Netherlands and Netherlands East Indies Memorial (WWII, 1939 -45).

Memorial Corner has recently been upgraded to provide greater access and additional planting including Turkish Gallipoli Rosemary, propagated from a cutting collected at Anzac Cove by a returning digger.
