Your guide to historical Redlands

Redlands is a region steeped in history and culture. It is  home to a vibrant indigenous culture stretching back more than 20,000 years, as well as being the site of some of the earliest European settlements in Australia.

Home of the Quandamooka people, North Stradbroke Island offers the informative Goompi Trail tour, led by an experienced local indigenous guide. Here you’ll learn about aspects of Aboriginal life, such as fishing techniques, bush tucker and bush medicines.

Discover our native flora and fauna landscape and get a literal taste of bush-tucker at Redlands IndigiScapes in Capalaba. Sample the sweetness of rosella and lilly pilly and munch on the savoury tanginess of bush tomatoes and kurrajong seed.

After your tour of the extensive gardens and natural bushland, experience a gourmet twist on bush flavours at the Tea Garden Cafe. Lemon myrtle coconut cake will tempt with its sweet creaminess, or maybe you’ll indulge in desert lime and custard gelato or Devonshire bush tea with strawberry and wattle-seed jam.

Art lovers should head over to North Stradbroke Island for a visit to the Salt Water Murris’ Quandamooka Indigenous Art Gallery. Marvel at the rich colours and mesmerising patterns of the traditional and modern indigenous artworks and perhaps choose one to add to your collection. Each work tells a story, and allows the artist to share his or her culture with others. The gallery also stocks jewellery, homewares, children’s puzzles and more, so it’s the perfect spot to pick out unique gifts for loved ones.

Ormiston House

For a glimpse into the more recent past, museums and heritage trails abound. Imagine yourself as a 19th-century bayside dweller in the period-furnished bedroom and post office at the Redland Museum. When the sun is out, partake in an elegant Edwardian-style picnic on the lush lawns surrounding the historical
Ormiston House – and don’t forget to take a peek inside. Or, propel yourself back in time as you learn the incredible stories of the inmates of the former Dunwich Benevolent Asylum at North Stradbroke Island Historical Museum.
