Construction projects at South Bank

South Bank Parklands is undergoing significant transformation, with many exciting construction projects currently underway in the precinct. 

This page will provide information about the upcoming impacts of construction to South Bank Parklands visitors.

Neville Bonner Bridge

The Neville Bonner Bridge will link both sides of the Brisbane River, forming a stronger connection between the popular South Bank arts and cultural precinct and the future Queen’s Wharf Brisbane precinct.

Upcoming impacts to South Bank:

From Sunday 21 - Tuesday 23 November, between 10pm and 5am daily, Clem Jones Promenade will be closed between the Victoria Ridge and Riverside Green to facilitate installation of bridge sections. Traffic controllers will guide pedestrians and cyclists along a temporary detour.

South Bank Ferry Terminal Upgrade

From Monday 17 May until late 2021, South Bank 1 and 2 ferry terminal will be closed during construction works.

Upcoming impacts to South Bank:

CityCat services will not stop at South Bank 1 and 2 ferry terminal and will be diverted to South Bank 3 ferry terminal. South Bank 3 ferry terminal is located approximately 600 metres downstream, or a 7-minute walk.

New Performing Arts Venue

In May 2018, the Queensland Government announced it would invest $125 million over four years to deliver a new $150 million theatre on the Playhouse Green site co-located with and operated by QPAC. 

The New Performing Arts Venue (NPAV) is a new $150 million theatre will deliver a minimum 1500 seat theatre to meet existing audience and producer demand and support continued growth of performing arts in Queensland.

Upcoming impacts to South Bank:

No significant upcoming impacts to Russell or Grey Streets.

Cross River Rail

The $5.4 billion Cross River Rail is a new 10.2 kilometre rail line from Dutton Park to Bowen Hills, which includes 5.9 kilometres of tunnel under the Brisbane River and CBD.

No current impacts.

Brisbane Metro

Connecting the city to the suburbs, Brisbane Metro will be a key part of Brisbane’s greater transport network. Metro services will run along dedicated busways and link with suburban bus and train services as part of a better planned network.

Upcoming impacts to South Bank:

Early works are now complete. Major infrastructure works commence: Victoria Bridge, Cultural Centre station and Queensland Cultural Centre in 2022.

South Bank Train Station

Platform 1 at South Bank Train Station is being upgraded.

Upcoming impacts to South Bank:

All platform 1 services to Cleveland, Beenleigh and the Gold Coast will run express from South Brisbane to Park Road stations skipping South Bank Station.
